Michel Eyquem, Lord of Montaigne, known as Montaigne (1533-1592), is undoubtedly the most famous of the 16th-century French humanists and philosophers. Of his original castle, only a section of the ramparts and the famous tower where he wrote his "Essays" remain. A stroll through the gardens is peaceful and charming. But for anyone interested in the writer, a visit to the tower, where Montaigne had his study, his "library," remains a deeply moving experience. The room has been preserved in its original state, entirely of stone, with beams engraved with maxims from Greek and Latin authors that supported his humanist reflections. After three visits to this place, I like to imagine that Montaigne returns here at night to write the next installment of his essays, with a wry smile reflecting on the woes of our time: "My God, nothing has changed," he might think...

Montaigne's Château is located in the Dordogne department, between Bergerac and Bordeaux, France.
