No Andy, it's not medlars ( in french "nèfles" ) ... they are kakis ( the same in french ), the fruits of the persimmon ( in french "plaqueminier" ).

Oh! Of course they are. I just never expected to see then growing in northern Europe! Yes, I've had these a few times.
I once knew a medlar tree in a hedge on a farm near my home. I was waiting for the right moment to pick a few and then 'blett' them as I had read (wait for them to soften). I went with a basket at the right time ... to find that the whole hedge had been destroyed to make way for a larger field! :o(
c'est vrai que c'est un fruit bizarre au goût :âpre et sucré ;mais c'est surtout les vers à l'endroit de l'attache que je redoute ,lol ! en fait ,comme tu dis ,vaut mieux les regarder que les manger ! je pense que ça attire les oiseaux ?
