Thanks for this Gordon. As we stopped here, thinking about it, a Fell Runner ran past us through the gateway and she went down almost to her knees in the thick oozing bog here. It looked as if it would improve in some places further up but there was no way past this point without getting thoroughly wet and muddy even though we both had walking boots on.
