The Glencoe turf and creel house

Not only can one enjoy a bite to eat and rest at the Glencoe visitors centre but you can also get a glimpse into a 17th century, historically accurate Highland turf and creel house. Authentic techniques featuring thick turf walls, wattle-and-daub partitions and a thatched roof was used. Stepping inside one can get a feel of how local people lived around here 300 years ago.

After exploring this, there are dozens of both easy and energetic walks of all lengths from here so no shortage of things to do and see. Unfortunately for us, the hut and views here were as good as it got. See PiPs.

Herb Riddle replied to Erhard Bernstein:

Hi Erhard. A mistake here as this was originally intended for the HWW but I decided on the heron instead. Glad you enjoyed this just the same.

Best wishes. Herb

gives a nice impression how people lived here ages ago, for us hard to imagine living there. We never saw a visitors centre in Glencoe, was it always there?

Herb Riddle replied to Ko Hummel:

Hi Ko. the original visitor centre was built in the 1970s on the opposite side of the A82 near the Clachaig area. It later became too small and was considered intrusive within the landscape.
The new eco-friendly centre was designed by Gaia Architects and constructed on a different site at Inverigan. The project began in the 1990s, with the architects commissioned in 1993, and the building process extended over several years.
The replacement centre opened in May 2002

Thing change over time I know, in structure and memory too :)

Take care. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Two weeks is a long time in this big glen but I suppose even that is not enough to explore all there is to see around here. I imagine, like with Ko (above) this centre was not here then. - I can well imagine the rain that is the normal weather here.

Cheers, Herb

A super little series Herb. I love the juxtaposition of the of the peaks and the Creel house, which are not too dissimilar in shape and the light in each shot is just lovely.

The image of the Creel house in the PiP is excellent and it shows off the wonderful detail of its construction. I especially like the ingenious use of thatch weights.

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

Thanks for your reaction here Keith. The scenery around and from here was pretty fantastic, as can be seen. The construction was most interesting from the inside too which we looked at. It was however quite empty except for a makeshift fire.

Best Wishes. Herb
