HWW ~ Sailor’s lament
The lot of sailors and fishermen throughout time memorial has been a dangerous one. Our seas and Oceans have always been dangerous, especially in bad weather. Nowadays, things are somewhat safer with modern design and instrumentation but life on the high seas still cannot be taken for granted.
This gravestone seen in the churchyard of the Norfolk village of Happisburgh is a stark reminder.
“The barque 'Young England' of Middlesbrough was wrecked in 1875 off the coast of Winterton, Norfolk. The six crewmembers who lost their lives are buried at Happisburgh Churchyard. Their gravesite features a stone cross and an anchor, which were erected by public subscription initiated by the local "beachmen". The memorial at Happisburgh Churchyard honours the sailors, who came from several different countries, reflecting the international nature of seafaring life in the 19th century. The nationalities of the buried crew included men from England, Holland, Norway, and Sweden.” ChatGPT
