Grey Wagtail

A chance encounter on a local winter walk. Quite grainy, I am afraid as it was dark on the river resulting in this taken at 6400 ISO and then having to be severely cropped but I liked the bird.
“The Grey Wagtail is more colourful than its name suggests, with slate grey upper parts and distinctive lemon yellow under-tail. Its tail is noticeably longer than those of Pied and Yellow Wagtails. They have gradually increased their range in the past 150 years and in the UK have expanded into the English lowlands from the northern and western uplands.” www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/grey-wagtail

Thanks Güni. It was a chance sighting that I quickly took advantage of. As you say such scenes puts us to the test. Thanks for liking this one.

Despite the obvious noise in the photo............this is still a cracking shot. Much better to have a grainy shot than no shot at all. I'm guessing that if you had a longer lens to hand, the bird wouldn't have turned up :-) Such is the joy of wildlife photography.

Nicely done Herb!

Herb Riddle replied to Keith Burton:

Hi Keith. I was actually shooting snow scenes around here and glanced down to see this bird but it was darting around so fast I did not have time to alter my settings that were set to a unusual for me auto-iso at F8 (the sweet spot of my lens) and I just had time to push up the shutter speed. I have two lenses longer than this -one is very heavy and big the other is quite handy but a questionable quality. They both would have better better at this moment in time but.....life is not like that. Anyway, glad you liked it.

Cheers. Herb

Keith Burton replied to Herb Riddle:

I got rid of my 100-400mm lens last year as it was proving to be too heavy to carry. My longest lens now is my 40-150mm, which I have two version of: the F2.8 Pro and the f4 Pro. The former is also quite heavy so that will be going soon!

Well spotted and captured. A good eye is better than a good lens.
