I saw the movie "Predators" on the weekend. I was looking forward to seeing it, but not walking in with high expectations. I'm a fan of the original Predator movie, and I even liked the 2nd one. Aliens Vs. Predator, the Predator: Concrete Jungle game, and almost anything Predator related is likely to have at least some level of coolness for me.
The latest movie felt like the biggest budget fan-movie ever made to pay homage to another movie. There was enough that was different about it to make it an official sequel, but so much that was pulled directly from the first movie to make fans say "Heh, just like in the first one." It's not really a good movie, but it is a fun movie if you like the Predator franchise. Sadly, the biggest thing missing from this movie that you just can't capture from the first movie is that sense of "somethings stalking me and I don't know what." The mystery was a lot of the hook in the first film, and it's so hard to make that happen again. The cat-and-mouse sensation also felt toned down. When the main characters spend so much time on the offensive, you lose that sense that they're being hunted. Even though they were lost and isolated, they didn't express that very well through their behaviours.
So those are my issues. With all that said, they did accomplish some of what they seemed to be going for. Something old, something new. Someone bloody, decapitations too. It was as enjoyable as a brainless summer action movie can be expected to be, but not as memorable, intense, or stylish as the first.
