It looked like the Tron world, sounded like the Tron world, and the plot was fitting to the Tron world. The story and acting wasn't the highest of quality, but the first one wasn't exactly Oscar worthy in these respects either.
Where Legacy wins is that I never got the feeling it was trying to be something it wasn't. I never felt it was trying to be a movie that reached beyond some slick visuals with a cash-in on nostalgia. And that sound like a bad thing, but it really help to keep things simple and let you have some fun at the movies.
There were however some things that I was hoping to see that I didn't. I'm not sure how many people remember, but in the original Tron when Flynn makes his way into the city, there's a bunch of control programs. He refers to these as "live ones". Some of them had exaggerated and extravagant outfits on that made them look more unique and less humanoid. It would have been fun to see some of these walking around.
There were also non-humanoid creatures populating the world of the original Tron, like the grid bugs and bit. Although there was an homage to bit, seeing some more interesting things running about would also have been fun. Of course the first also had the MCP to face at the end, and this one didn't have the same type of climax to the movie.
And there were little things that I didn't notice happen. In the original water was basically power. So when they took a drink their lights got even brighter. I didn't notice this happening in the "bar" scene.
The little touches combined with a greater general awareness of computers in this day and age took away some of the wonder that made the first so mesmerizing.
Now it may sound like I'm coming down hard on this movie, but despite all of this I still had fun. The combat scenes were enjoyable, and having a more fluid movement to the light cycles didn't detract from how cool they were. The addition of light runner and light jet where also fun to see.
I think the key word is fun. Not revolutionary, or epic, or profound. It was fun. Grab some popcorn and go in with your eyes wide, your brain off, and enjoy the experience. I've seen word that a teaser trailer for Tron 3 will be on the DVD release of this movie, so I'm sure there will be more from the world of Tron to come.
