6/21/13 Thunderstorms
I woke up today to find out I was experiencing my first power outage. Apparently there were a couple hundred people without power in my area, there were about 130,000 customers without power in the state according to Xcel Energy during the early hours of the after math of the storm. I heard lots of loud thunder, at some point so loud that I had to cover my ears, raining hard, and strong winds. People in Hudson, Wisconsin were also affected by the thunderstorms. I did not see any damage on the power lines serving my neighborhood but im sure there was a break somewhere on the line.
Power right now at my house has been restored along with my neighborhood and other areas that were out. I have to say that Xcel does a pretty good job keeping the power on here and in my area.

I hear ya. It gets aggravating not having lights but I've been through a few outages over the years and at least one significant 'brownout' (where the lights simply go very dim for note than a few minutes).

When I lived near Detroit during the heavy load summer season, it wasn't common to have an outage once every two weeks! Cutouts would trip, lines would smoke, and even transformers blew. The old 4.8kv grid in that area always seem to have trouble keeping up with today's demands.

Geez! That sounds like a good reason to start doing some upgrades. Is many of Detroit's 4kv system still having trouble?

So the utilities in Michigan are summer peaking utilities? Xcel Energy (Northern States Power) is another summer-peak utility while Otter Tail Power is a winter-peaking utility on the other hand.
