Sometimes it's great to be wrong
So!
Back in the fifties
In the middle of Florida
5, let's see, no, 7, of us had been, caving, spelunking but
that's another story.
None the less,
after spelunking,
we all hopped in 2 cars to
head back to campus.
Now
It was a hot day, so
we'd left the doors open
on the cars. Drivin' back, in our car we suddenly heard
a sound from 'neath the seat
to my ear it was pretty damn close to
a sound I'd head before, the
dry
repeating rhythm of the rattle of a rather peeved
rattlesnake!
Now I can attest that
the other 3 guys in the car
including the driver
heard it the same way and
thought exactly the same thing cause
next thing you know
all four of us
each and every one of us
had both feet up on the seats and
a close eye on the floor.
The driver turned
off the ignition and
we coasted to a stop
along side the dirt road and
opened four doors and
with all possible dignity
nonchalantly but smartly
exited the vehicle.
So
the other 3 guys
pulled up behind us
and queried; "whafo?"
We 'spained.
Then they
went back to their rig
pulled a couple of snake sticks and
a burlap sack
out of the back and proceeded
to pull stuff apart and
the front and back seats
out of our rig.
When all was said and done
tweren't no rattler found
just a busted seat spring that
had rubbed 'gainst the dry
plastic seat bottom.

I didn't complain then and
I still ain't complainin'
to this
very day.
