Pod Sisters & Cyber Brothers, I Salute You!

One of the nicest things about online photography sites like ipernity is how it brings us all together into a close-knit community of like-minded friends.

Flickr was my first online photography home and as I began to become a better photographer, I also made new friends. As important as it is to take pictures, it's also very important to look at other people's photography for inspiration, instruction, and often to see the world in a completely different way. Part of my daily routine (unless I am swamped with work) is to visit everyone who has left new comments, to take a good look at their latest picture(s), and to leave a thoughtful comment. As the months have passed, I've gotten to meet and know so many wonderful and talented people!

I try to take pictures in a certain way, and this is a style that's slowly developed since I got my Canon 5D Mark II and 100mm 2.8L macro lens. My style is influenced by countless things in my life, but one of the most substantial is looking at other people's pictures which are similar, yet different, than my own. Because I take similar pictures, it's easier for me to learn a technique they're using that I haven't tried. It's super!

About six months ago, a dear friend of mine over at Flickr wrote to me and told me that we are like two peas in a pod, and from that day forth, we became Pod Sisters and fellow Podlings. About the same time, another good friend of mine began calling me his Cyber Sister, so he became my Cyber Brother. Since then, whenever I find a photographer whose style is much like mine, they become my Pod Sister or Cyber Brother! :) I feel like all of us share a common bond and see eye to eye about photography, and so many other things too. It's easy to recognize new "Podlings" or "Cyber Bros" because in every case I feel like I've known you all of my life! It's a wonderful feeling, and it's great to meet new friends and to build these strong friendships!

The hardest part about coming over to ipernity is the fact that I have many Pod Sisters and Cyber Brothers there who will not be joining me here. It makes me very, very sad because I'm going to miss them so much when I cut ties to Flickr. However, I am overjoyed that I have been meeting more and more like-minded friends here on ipernity, and with my brand new Podlings and Cyber Bros, the depression I've been feeling ever since Flickr exploded, is finally beginning to drift away. It feels fantastic!! I am so glad to be surrounded by so many talented photographers who I can call my good friends...I love you all!

*big hugs and much love to my Pod Sisters and Cyber Brothers*

A nice message summing up how a proper photographer works,I just have a Canon power shot and my photos are just snapshots of my life on this little island,One day maybe I will get a really good camera and try something a little more ambitious.

I couldn't agree more Janet. Just by visiting other people's photos I have developed a love for photography I never knew I had. Once just a casual picture taker, I now find myself trying new things due to photogs like yourself. I never would have thought that I would shoot dozens of shots of a flower or blade of grass to come up with just a couple to use but I have and have just taken my first ever landscape and flying bird shots. They may be amateurish, but I have yet to be told to throw away my camera and find a new hobby. That is the spirit of community and friendship that I have taken to heart and was worried that it would not be found here on ipernity...I am so relieved that it also exists here.

Totally agree Janet. I have the very same feelings. I have lots of friends on Flickr who have not made the move. I am heartened by the number of talented like minded photographers here on ipernity and the friendships i have already formed here.

Wonderful image by the way

LOVING the comments everyone!!! You are all awesome, and I hope that we get more and more of our friends to join us here at ipernity. At the same time, how wonderful it is to make so many new friends who are already here, and who have been so welcoming to us! Hooray for a great new home!

Well said, Janet. I think we all had Pod Sisters and Cyber Brothers (even though we may not have used those terms) on previous sites whose work we admired and attempted to emulate. Any photo site is only as good as the members and from what I've seen of Ipernity it's pretty darn good. There are many people here (old and new friends) whose work I respect and admire, some in styles completely different to my usual stuff. We can all learn from each other.

I love the terms, Janet: Pod Sisters and Cyber Brothers! I think we all had them, even though we didn't call them that. Friends. So very hard to leave behind. I've been sad for weeks.
But now the sadness and the deep sense of loss is beginning to lift as I am slowly starting to make new friends here at ipernity.
So, I'm optimistic.
Here's to new beginnings!!

I don't know you, but I happened on your blog and love your message. I also came from Flickr; I am part of a large community of doll collectors, and use photography as a means to share my hobby with other like-minded people. But I also have always loved taking nature photos. I am in no way a photographer, but wish that I could take better pictures. Ironically enough, leaving Flickr has opened me up to the world of photography, LOL! Many of my doll friends have come over to ipernity, which is nice, but equally nice is making new friends from the photography community! You have all inspired me to learn more about the art. I have seen utterly stunning work, and such talent! I thank the people of ipernity for welcoming all us Flickr expatriots, and for facilitating the growth of the community. Thank you for your lovely message, Janet, and I hope to cross paths with you in the future (btw, I love your peapod photo!) :-D

I'm missing my old flickr friends too, but enjoying the new contacts I'm making here - some of them seem as crazy as the old lot, which is good ;-)

Love the glowing hairs on this brave little pod!

Fine text with exactly my thoughts about leaving Flickr.

If I may, I would like to use You as my 'Hubling' to relevant iPer content, which I've found somewhat scattered, to put it mildly. :-)

Podling is such a happy term! :-D

Thank you for sharing this. It's always nice to know that others have similar emotions about the world of sharing photography on the web. (Wish I could write as clearly about it as you, but at least now I can point people to this to say - see, that's how I feel.)

[I'm forced to go onto the flickr site now and again because I can't bring myself to abandon the contacts who have chosen to stay - and all those favorites! It's very sad over there.]
