Ugly Mood
This week, I've been in an ugly mood:

Centrica, which owns British Gas, have posted half yearly profits of £1.3 billion.

Shell earnings have topped $11.5 billion.

BP profits are shown as $6.2 billion. These are not typos!

In the UK, food and fuel poverty has more than trippled in a year.

Hundreds of thousands in the UK could have their gas/electricity cut off due to being unable to pay the exorbitant bills.

Longevity under 12 years of Tory rule is reversing with many spending longer in chronic ill health in later life.

Meanwhile, Sunak, the wannabe next PM backs the return of grammar schools. Oh, that will solve all our problems!

When I worked in a university, my manager called me a socialist as if that were a bad thing. I believe everyone has a right to an affordable roof over their heads, warmth, and enough food to eat. If that makes me a socialist, then I'm proud of that 'label.' It's painfully clear that the Tories do not share my views. They only care about their wealthy buddies, and who can help fund or further their career.

It's totally wrong IMO that these companies are making these obscene profits whilst the rest of us won't be able to afford to heat our homes this winter, and are having to cut back where we can to make our budgets stretch ever further. I'd ask: How do they sleep at night, but I know the answer: they sleep very well in a nice big house that is warm enough, and they have plenty to eat.

As I said, I'm in an ugly mood...

Oh I'm with you here, Fran. I saw those profits and was so shocked - they were so proud of them too and I thought - how can you justify the horrendous additions to the bills, yet crow about how much money you've made to give to your share holders?!!!

It made me in an ugly mood too. I can't see how I'm going to be able to pay my electricity bill next year - luckily I don't have gas nor have a car, so those extras don't affect me. When is my pension going to go up the same rate? This way the pension should go up by 200% to keep in line with inflation - can you see that happening?

Thanks Jenny. It's absolutely disgusting and unconscionable. How they're getting away with it whilst the whole country is suffering from bills that are unaffordable is beyond me. It's past time the government stepped in and renationalised ALL of our utilities.

They should have a big rise, I agree, it's not likely though I'm afraid.

My son and I have already discussed how we won't use the hot water boiler this winter, nor the central heating unless we have a very cold winter, and only then on the minimum setting simply to stop pipes freezing. I, and many others I'm sure, are hoping for a mild winter.

I can't really have much of an opinion as thing there are done so different. Also I don't have any first hand knowledge. It sounds awful though.

And Sunak wouldn't implement a "windfall tax" ! I would definitely be in favour of an excess profits tax this time around !

I'm with you Fran.
People should have the right to adequate housing, food and heat without having to scrimp and save just to afford such essentials.
I'm another proponent of nationalised utilities. They should never have been privatised in the first place, imo.

I went to a Grammar School, but didn't enjoy it very much, and when we were merged with another school to form a comprehensive I was even more unhappy. There was a lot of bullying as the two sets of pupils attempted to integrate. I've no objection to "gifted" programmes, nor the need to run specials for various other individuals and groups, but within a properly run comprehensive system.
I quite like the middle school concept, especially in rural / semi-rural areas.

Thanks Sara.
I'm sure a lot of people agree that housing and food should be a affordable for all. Worst thing councils did was sell off their housing stock without replacing it. In the 'old' days, I'd have got a council house back when I needed it, but I'm now stuck in the rental market which is very expensive, and there's no end.

Lot of bullying in schools. I too was bullied, mainly because my teacher introduced me as German when in fact I was born in England, but had lived in Germany (army father) for the previous 8 years.
