Mia (Vietnamese) / sugar cane
Sugar cane is a perennial sweet grass up to 7m high, its stalks can be up to 5cm thick. The sugar is stored in its marrow. Sugar cane grows in the tropics at temperatures around 28°C, and it needs a lot of rainfall. The plants cannot tolerate frost.
In New Guinea, sugar cane was already cultivated in the time before Christ. Marco Polo found sugar cane in China around 1280 AD; Arab
Travellers probably brought it to the Mediterranean.
