In the last photo I showed this pair of butterflies of the
new forest burnet (Zygaena viciae) in a peculiar mating position. But what happened next? After a strong gust of wind, the mating threatened to break up. At the last moment, however, one of the butterflies managed to hold on to a part of the grass, while the other kept its position. This is how this strange mating position came about. The PIP shows what it normally looks like.
