Yesterday I found a striking little white butterfly in a meadow. Delicately built, white with blue hues and little black markings.. It was a
male wood white butterfly of the genus Leptidea. There are only two species of this genus in Germany, namely Leptdidea reali and Leptidea sinapis. Since the two species cannot be distinguished externally (only on the basis of internal characteristics), the species name is
Leptidea reali/sinapis.
This delicate butterfly is widespread from Europe to China and occurs sporadically in southern Germany, but is absent in northern Germany, especially in coastal areas. It prefers warm habitats. The species is not yet considered endangered.
