PC ist altersschwach / PC is suffering from old age - Update August 2021
[EN] Jan, 10th, 2018

Meanwhile the mainboard and the CPU in my actual desktop PC are 6 years old. Time to think about an upgrade, the more so as the AMD APU (A6-3650) does not support high resolution monitors and with every new release of Lightroom or Photoshop everything becomes slower. And it should be an AMD CPU again, because the intel world is totally alien to me. Since I wanted to keep my 16 GB DDR3 RAM for cost reasons (latest technology DDR4 RAM would cost me an additional 200 €) I looked for an AM3+ board and a compatible processor, which is not so easy because that technology is not anymore state of the art. On the other hand I always settled for an older generation of technology because of better stability and mature design. It finally came down to the AMD FX-8350 and the ASRock 970 Pro3 R2 Mainboard. Since the CPU has no onboard graphics as my old A6 had, both items will be complemented by a simple Graphics Card (MSI Radeon RX 550). All in all it is about 300€ of fine electronics, and should carry me safely through the next 3 to 5 years. The Passmark index for the FX-8350 is with 8964 almost 3 times that of the old A6-3650 (which by the way was an excellent and reliable processor and still is for advanced office applications).

The important question to consider is what will happen to my Windows10 license with this new hardware environment. I had used the free upgrade option from Windows 7 two years ago. Will that license still work? Do I have to reactivate it, will it become void altogether? Research in the web yielded different answers. But it seems, if the installation of Windows 10 is linked to my Microsoft account, Microsoft will honor the installation in the new environment. So I have made sure, that the link is properly set.

Before the new stuff arrives tomorrow or on Friday I will make an Image backup of my Win 10 installation and mirror all data to my Notebook to be able to work, read my mails and go online.

I will continue report on progress and success (and hopefully not failre) here.

Update, Jan11th, 2018

All items arrived today, processor and cooler are installed on the mainboard.

Without CPU and cooler / Noch ohne CPU und Kühler

Just married / Verheiratet

Shutdown and disassemby of the old box will happen tomorrow around noontime followed by the installation of the new components. If all goes well I hope to be up and running again tomorrow afternoon, watch out and cross your fingers!

Update Jan 12th, 2018

To my surprise and relieve the Update went exceptionally well, I just forgot to order an adaptor for my second monitor. But that will be solved early next week. No other Hardware problems. Windows 10 didn't complain at all becauses I had linked that to my MS account but I had to activate both Lightroom and MS Office again.

More than three and a half years now since the last upgrade, it should actually last a while. But now there is a problem on the motherboard that sometimes does not recognize one or more disks at boot time. I therefore decided to upgrade from AM3+ to AM4 architecture. Again I use a motherboard from Asrock (B450 Steel Legend) and a Ryzen 5 3600 CPU from AMD. In addition 2 x 16 GB RAM from Corsair. The power supply and the CPU cooler have already been replaced a while ago. Tomorrow the package with the parts should arrive, stay tuned for more.

Update August 10th, 2021

Today the CPU arrived, so all parts are there and I can start with the rebuild. First remove everything except the power supply and clean it thoroughly, plenty of dust, especially in the fan assemblies. In 2.5 hours everything is done and reassembled. First boot is partially successful. The hardware is fine, but Windows won't start. Over and again different startup behavior, sometimes I get into the UEFI then again several times not. The Windows repair tools do not help either. After some hours of searching I identified an AMD driver (AODDriver2.sys) which is not compatible with the AMD Ryzen processor and which causes the crash (belongs to the program AMD Overdrive). But how to get rid of the driver if you can not get into the system? That costs me another few hours. Finally I succeeded in Safe Mode with the tool "Everything". The control panel and the Revo Uninstaller did not allow the uninstallation. That did it and everything was stable thereafter.

However, my old Windows 10 license was not accepted, but it worked with the old Win 7 license. Moreover I had to have my Office installation get unlocked by MS. Lightroom and Photoshop I had previously unregistered, that didn't cause any problems.

Update August 12th, 2021

Misfortune seldom comes alone, last night my data disk failed. Fortunately, everything - really everything - is backed up twice. The new disk (2TB) cost me 60€ and is installed at noon. Formatting takes 5 hours, then restoring the backups takes another 13 hours! After that, some cleanup and the world is back to normal after three days.

Old Configuration, some cables already diconnected

Motherboard with RAM, CPU and Cooler removed

Cleanup, only PSU remains inside the box

Now with new Motherboard, RAM, CPU and old Graphics card, HDD cage still empty. Smaler fan since maximum power on CPU is now 65W instear of 110 with the old CPU

Finished, all drives connected

My Desktop PC is older, I built it before 'Vista* was issued and it still performs perfectly on XP Pro using a 'Gigabyte' mainboard.

LutzP replied to Stormlizard:

You are a brave man, John. Running XP these days without any support by MS is a considerable security risk. Why? Because exploits discovered in actual OS' like 7, 8 or 10 may have existed in XP already (kernel changes may be minor only). As such exploits or weaknesses are becoming known the bad guys will try to invade older systems this way. Watch out carefully!

Thank you Lutz,
As I do not have personal dta such asbank etc on the machine they can't steal musch, yes they could use the PC as part of their hide the trail whengoing after bigger fish but, I have a firewall in my router between the web and my pc and one in the pc.
As I have the office convertion program for MS Office 7 I do still get security updates.

I will be buying a new or used desktop pc when I can get out to the stores hoping to be able to find one with at least two HD's with Win 7, otherwise I will have to go up to Win 10.

The current PC will be used offline for my photo work which can then be transfered to the new for uploading as I can't afford to buy new programs nor do I have the time to learnhow to use them.

Good luck with all the upgrades, Lutz. My computer got changed at work, and now there seem to be dozens of things to fix.

LutzP replied to Sami Serola (inactiv…:

...all worked well, Sami, with amazingly few problems. Most surprising was the lack of any problems with Win10, which was a free upgrade from 7.

LutzP replied to Bergfex:
