The road to Shimshal…the better parts

Shimshal is a very remote valley in far North Pakistan. It is at 3500meters in the high Pamirs, near the border with China. It saw its first car in 2003 when the locals built a 57 km road to connect with the Karakoram Highway. Prior to that all goods were portered in via a perilous Silk Route track high on the cliffs, with terrifying river crossings. My husband hiked in along that track in 1989 so we wanted to check out the valley today…where he met some people he first encountered then.
Then road here has a drop into a raging river on one side, and rock overhangs on the other. We did it in, and out again.

A life-threatening road, dear Diana. And if that was the better part of the road, how might the rest be...

What happens if one meets oncoming traffic? This looks so dangerous.

Diana Australis replied to Amelia:

One reverses to find a spot where it may be possible to pass with literally a hairs breath to spare.
Terrifying.

In ter ess ting... Is most of the 57Km of road cut into the mountain like this? Does it get snowed in during winter? How do people there make a living?

Diana Australis replied to GrahamH:

Yes. And in winter it is cut off totally as it is -40C
People are subsistence farmers and herders. Food is stored for winter and animals are brought down from very high summer pastures to winter in pens. Wolves, snow leopards and bears are a winter hazard.
