Bolton Castle

Driving back from the Aysgarth Falls we spotted this from the road before taking a closer look. We had visited the castle once before but in this instance on seeing the amount of visitors already there we forewent the experience.
Bolton Castle is a 14th-century castle located near Leyburn in Wensleydale, Yorkshire. The castle is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It was damaged in the English Civil War, and “slighted” afterwards, but much of it survived. Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for six months around 1568. It has never been sold and is still in the ownership of the descendants of the Scrope family. WiKi

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Thanks Gordon. When we were last in here, it was terrible weather with the rain beating down and part of the castle surrounded by scaffolding. We were the only people in and so had a personal conducted tour which was most interesting, especially regarding Mary. This time on reaching the carpark -there were no spare places and it looked like a couple of coaches of school children all involved in medieval play projects within the walls. We turned around!

Enjoy the day. Herb

Very well composed Herb...................the castle looks pretty impressive up on the high ground. I love how the trees surround it..........all part of the same estate probably! The sky here is particularly nice.

Viewed large, the detail is very good.

An interesting link too...........what a complicated and convoluted history the family and their estates have!
