Porlock Weir

Somehow, we seem to be choosing a lot of damp weeks for our holidays in Britain this year. Here I am at the very picturesque seaside village of Porlock Weir in Somerset and capturing this shot between heavy showers. The tide is out and there are only a few of the numerous tourist that are usually here. The old lock to our left goes into a more sheltered section populated by local small boats.

Enjoy the day.

Now that brings back a few memories of some good times in my distant youth ...

We had several short breaks there, courtesy of my mother's sister & husband. Accommodation would now, probably, be described as a "second home" but the cottage was actually used as a retreat by various members of the village community where my aunt & uncle lived. Even then, we made a point of using local facilities as much as possible.

Thanks for this. It must have been nice to be there for some time, seeing all the different moods that this area has to offer, in different seasons too. We stayed near the village of Porlock itself and that presented a great variance of photo scenery and walks. A fine area indeed.

Best Wishes. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to Roger (Grisly):

A great place to live no doubt at all Roger and much warmer climate than our home in Lancashire. I was sorry to see that it shared our wetness though! Glad you enjoyed it. (I see you have your own PW photos too.)

Have a great Sunday, as well. Herb

Yes damp covers most recent days. So much so that I have bought a new coat and next some waterproof shoes. It is still worth going places like this while it’s possible. Many of your recent photos are by the sea and I am enjoying them but also longing for a sight of the sea myself.

Herb Riddle replied to Colin Ashcroft:

You are so right re the weather, after that long spell of hot dry weather earlier in the year. Yes, we have visited a lot of shorelines over the last few months but that will finish now. My pleasure to bring a land-lubber these sea shots though. I know the feeling of longing to see the sea after even a short lapse of time.

Take care. Herb

Herb Riddle replied to TOZ:

Thanks Gordon. I must admit that I was rather pleased with the outcome of this shot. My others from here look a bit glum! -Yes a GE (or Bing Maps) view of the area by foot tells all the secrets. In a way, its a pity as it leaves nothing left to surprise you. - We wanted to, but never did drop into the local pubs or cafe's in the village, as I had left my wallet in the cottage, thinking that we would not make it all the way here via our very wet forest walk. (a lesson for me perhaps!)

Cheers. Herb

Despite the weather, this is still a lovely shot Herb. I like the picturesque cottages and the boats in the foreground. Nicely composed and taken.
