Pêgo do Altar
The submerged baroque bridge
This monument was made in the 18th century. The submerged bridge was created in baroque style, in the same style as the local church. The bridge is on the old road to Évora and is rarely dry.
This ancient bridge in the Alentejo region has been submerged by the waters of the Pego do Altar dam. But the drought that has hit the Alentejo caused the level of the reservoir to drop, uncovering the ancient passage between the towns of Santa Susana and São Cristóvão. The bridge, about 30 metres long, was built 200 years ago and its return to daylight attests to the nightmare that the lack of rainfall represents for the Sado basin.
SUNDAY CHALLENGE 49
Sorry but couldn't achieve a new photo this week, so this is from the vaults but reflects today's situation with severe drought.
