another fire in Longdendale

This fire is said to be under control today but yesterday it burnt a much wider area estimated as 400sqM. As with many of these fires they say (unofficially but from a fireman involved over night) started deliberately.

It is a shame that there are some idiots about who think it's fun to start fires, great shot I just no one or no livestock was injured.

I came out of a local shop yesterday only to be quickly hustled out of the carpark very quickly as a car was on fire, if we hadn't have been hustled out so quick I would have grabbed some pics.

Colin Ashcroft replied to James:

i would think lots of wildlife would have been affected but no reports of people injured. The firefighters are still there so it becomes a time consuming and eventually exhausting for them.

do you think it was an electric car on fire ?

James replied to Colin Ashcroft:

No it was a proper ice car, apparently it had a brand new battery fitted the day before and it has been attributed as the cause, faulty battery or wiring problem maybe

I was just about to say that I liked the sky and cloud formations.......but on reading your narrative I realised that it was actually smoke from a fire!

There is already enough risk of wildfires happening in this really hot weather without moronic people starting them deliberately..!!

I really hope no one was hurt, but as you say I suspect a lot of wildlife will be affected.

Thank heavens for the firefighters..!!

Yes I am on a local bird and wildlife Whatsapp group including some specialist naturalist some academics and many experienced amateurs. There has been reports of birds fleeing the area including Oystercatchers, Golden Plover and Lapwings which unfortunately may have lost flightless young. Something revealed that I didn’t know was it was a Nightjar area. That is not all bad news they will have flown ( again could have lost young) but they tend to colonise areas recovering after fires - so they may return in future years. It’s an education being on that group but I am baffled by the insects and plants. The full-time naturalists are trying to find 1000 species of flora and fauna in the valley! Colin

That fire must have been a fair size as we had to close the windows (in that dreadful heat too) to try and keep out the choking smell of burned grass here at home some 7+ miles away. A choice of death by smoke inhalation or heat stroke. Not good. Thank goodness the later downpour must have helped to put it out. I hope you were safe at home too.

Best wishes and keep cool. Herb

ps right away I thought - started deliberately by board hooligans.

Colin Ashcroft replied to Herb Riddle:

The wind has generally been blowing away from our house but could taste it in the air when I went to a shop, unfortunately my sister is in hospital I thought I could smell it at Tameside Hospital.

i just added a short video to show the smoke heading in your direction.

Makes you realise how quickly these fires spread.

Colin Ashcroft replied to Dave C:

the problem was the wind speeds increased just about the same time the firefighters got on site

Keith Burton replied to Colin Ashcroft:

It's very sad for the wildlife, especially if they've lost their young!

Your WhatsApp group sounds interesting. I'll have to see if there is one local to me!
