Fenced in on the streets of Dunhuang, population 60,000, in Xinjiang, China. Remote Dunhuang in the Gobi Desert has the UNESCO site of the Mogao Caves, 1000 Buddhist temples carved into a long hillside from the 5th to 10th Centuries. It hosts 50,000 visitors per day in the tourist season. We were there outside that season…mercifully quiet, though freezing. This is the market area adorned with thousands of continuous illuminated Buddhist scenes. Here we were fenced in by apsaras, or Buddhist angel figures for a couple of hundred meters.
China never ceases to amaze!
