It probably fills much the same niche for an arid region plant, I think this one is known as an "Old-man Saltbush".

How cool is that! :) They look very comfortable and happy. I would love to see a wild one out in the bush some day. I think kangaroos are fascinating. I remember watching a show about how they keep cool, by licking their arms where the veins are closest to the surface. So interesting and clever!
