carshalton water tower, surrey

part garden ornament, part water tower complete with water wheel, orangery and plunge bath; this brick building c.1719 was by henry joynes, vanbrugh's comptroller of works at blenheim, hence its style, with distinct similarities to vanbrugh's in its plaster vaulting and crenellations, its mixture of classicism with a "castle air ".
