danbury church, essex
eastern wooden effigy of a knight in the north aisle, late c13 . he is probably a st.clere. the damaged area reveals the hollowed out interior of these effigies, done to help prevent the timber splitting. some have been found to be packed with charcoal to aid the drying process.
