st.mary's church , slaugham
c12 font on a victorian base. as can be seen in this photo the pews have been ripped out to be replaced by waiting room chairs which look bad now and will age no better, and the patina of the floor has been buried in concrete and shiny beige tile and orange carpet. this sort of modernising vandalism should never be allowed, if churches had to adhere to planning rules for listed buildings it could not happen. an aesthetic disaster, enough to make one weep. it seems some happy clappy evangelist thought that this old rural parish church would be rendered attractive and relevant to modern youth with a shiny bright colourful makeover, replacing all that complicated musty history with the clean decor we all know and love from airports and shopping malls today.
