gaslight detail on the east side of the square, built by adam in 1793-8 in neo-classical portland stone. these standards are usually bereft of both hat and globe, terminating in a horizontal ring above the arms rising from the cross piece, which supported the lamplighters ladder. I suspect that the hat held a well of colva oil, and that the light was closer to a tilly than a gas light.
