Read an interesting book about western propaganda in post-war Finland. After WW2 GB and the US were worried about Finland falling prey to Soviet propaganda, so they started their own here. Their offices in Helsinki flooded us with their books and magazines, radio news, tv-shows and movies and granted generous scholarships in their universities; so successful was their campaign that us Finns still don’t understand why we all absolutely love english language, Reader’s Digest, Donald Duck, John Wayne and indeed anything coming from the west – even that other Donald. (According to a recent study, our interaction with US has never been livelier than during the Trump's first administration.)

That love applies to Hornet (pictured) as well, our number one war machine against the Evil Empires, Rogue States and whatever Axes of Evil the west has pointed us with its long and wise finger. Surely that eternal love will also apply to the Hornet’s successor F-35, which was officially chosen of five fighter candidates – even though everyone was so sure there really was no other option than the most expensive one, F-35, that our former Chief of Defence went to work for Lockheed Martin, maker of F-35, before the deal was fixed.

Who ever said love was free?

I, err… shot her at the Malmi Airshow. Our beloved one is sooo beautiful, capable of doing sooo pretty things, isn’t she?

Never say never! After Mutter Merkel has retired her current job, nothing prevents her from becoming our next (and first) Chancellor of Finland.

Wow! Excellent capture!

In Switzerland, our authorities are currently evaluating a new fighter jet. The old ones have reached the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. But in our country, the population can also express its opinion. The vote is on Sept. 27. :-)

Spo replied to polytropos:

Oh, you have a referendum on that one, too! We don't have them too often.
If I'm not awfully wrong, your jet candidates are exactly the same as ours.

There are among others American and Asian alternatives. Now the question is who we want to be spied on. ;-)

Spo replied to polytropos:

In that sense US would be a solid choice, since we already are spied by them. :D

Yes, a good argument. In addition, the government in the USA will (hopefully) change soon. In China the government will remain constant for the next 50 years. ;-)

Spo replied to polytropos:

Well, if US accuses China of espionage, it doesn't make China a spy. US has used every possible trick in the book to keep China market share down, started the trade war with it, etc etc, this espionage thing is just part of the strategy. The situation may ease with the new US administration, but the basics won't change: US will do anything to protect its business worldwide. Any country that grows strong enough to threaten US power will be named a rogue state or an evil empire. That has already happened with Russia and Iran and it is already starting with Europe: the united EU is becoming a threat. Oh, how happily Uncle Sam is clapping his hands at the brexit.

But who do you wish to be your enemy?

Remembered the three wishes of Finnish soldier during last wars. That the China would attack Finland, three times. So, the army of China would march over Soviet Union at least five times! =D

Spo replied to Sami Serola (inactiv…:

Oh, I had never heard that one! Do I have to understand then, that after the third try China would have no-one left to return?

Sure we need an enemy – or at least the politicians do. But since it can be anyone, some far-away country would be the best choice. Like Australia: we have nothing in common but the Eurovision song contest, so we could express our contempt for them by never giving them a single point.
