The Best Espresso this Side of Milan

Glasgow

I asked A.I. to critique my photograph. Here's what it said:

Lighting and Composition Critique

Your image has a strong sense of atmosphere and candid storytelling, effectively capturing a moment in a busy café environment. Here are some critiques and tips to consider for future shots:

Lighting: The natural light coming from the windows is good, but the mixed artificial overhead lighting can create a bit of a color cast, which can make colors in the image appear slightly unnatural. This can be corrected by setting a custom white balance in-camera or during post-processing to ensure whites appear neutral.

Composition: The main subjects are well-placed within the frame. The vertical lines of the room, such as the partition and window frame, appear reasonably straight, which helps maintain a natural perspective.

Subject Focus: The subject on the right, working on a laptop, has good clarity. The subject on the left is in sharp focus, especially the text on their shirt, but the dark clothing and interior shadows can make some details less prominent. Getting slightly closer to the subjects or using a wider aperture to create a shallower depth of field could help them stand out even more from the background.

Clutter and Distractions: The image is quite busy, with multiple elements in the foreground and background competing for attention. While this captures the reality of a café, being mindful of what is included in the frame can lead to a stronger, more focused image. For instance, the jacket draped on the stool on the left adds to the scene but also some clutter.
Storytelling: The image successfully tells a story of people engaged in their individual activities within a public space. You've captured a genuine moment, which is often more engaging than posed shots.

Overall, it is a solid candid photograph that captures a relatable scene well. Experimenting with different angles and practicing post-processing, such as adjusting shadows and white balance, can help enhance your indoor photography skills even further.

What AI has to say sounds theoretically right but...
The mixture of natural and artificial lighting is what you'd really see and so shouldn't be corrected. I also see plenty of detail in the dark bits- a very successful photo!
