Swanage Lock-up + 2 PiPs

There are many hidden gems to discover in Swanage and this is one that I found last year, behind the Town Hall. ~ Opened in 1803 this lock-up was formerly in the churchyard, but moved to rear of town hall in Swanage. It operated until 1899. The sign above the door says, Erected for the prevention of Vice & Immorality by The Friends of Religion and Good Order A.D. 1803.
Two PiPs.

Rosalyn Hilborne replied to Günter Klaus:

Thank you very much for your kind comment dear Günter. Yes so many people do speak English now, and so much so that I feel I should learn Welsh, so that no one would know what I was talking about when abroad....or in England come to that! ;-))

Best wishes and a good new week ahead, Rosa.

Well captured Rosa and the PiPs are fascinating. Swanage always seemed so genteel to me.
I would not have thought Swanage could ever have been a den of vice with a building of such small dimensions built to hold them!!!!!
Was it replaced by something more modern in 1899?
Have a good week ahead

Rosalyn Hilborne replied to Ecobird:

Thank you very much Carol. I was quite surprised too.
May be after 1899 the friends of religion and good
order just gave up! ;-))

I hope you also have a good new week Carol.

What fascinating find Rosa............and I love the inscription above the door.........I suspect it got some heavy use in those times!

A beautiful shot..........with super detail in all the stonework and Ilike the old-style street lamp. Some interesting information in the wall plaque too.

Have a good week!
