When I was a boy a stamp only cost a groat.

Great capture of all that shiny red. A well-seen composition, too.

Many thanks for dropping by, John.
I don't recall anyone ever mentioning a groat before. The only groat I have seen was a silver one my dad had on his watch chain.

That's historic:-) The 50p part looks as if it might still work, but 50p won't get your far these days;-)

Polyrus replied to Gudrun:

Yes, Gudrun. it is a good example of inflation. The current price of one 2nd class letter in the UK is 56p....and that would have bought over 50 stamps at 1D well before 2nd class was thought of.
Thanks for dropping by.

Polyrus replied to Steve Bucknell:

They are what one needs to contact companies which hide their email addresses and phone numbers!

Excellent; also remember when I often had to run my mothers late letters round to our local post box to catch the 8.30 pm, last post collection, on a Sunday evening and the letter mostly arrived next morning.

Polyrus replied to Roger Dodger:

Thanks a lot for your input, Roger. No such Sunday mayhem any longer as Royal Mail curtailed collections on Sundays, along with ending late collections from most post boxes.
