313213 back through Newhaven Harbour 29 4 2023
This group of photos records a celebration of a class of electric commuter trains, that got cascaded down to the south coast for their retirement years. They originally ran on North London commuter lines with pantographs to work under overhead wires, as well as being equipt for third rail power. The oldest, blue, train 313 201 was repainted in the colours they originally ran in, although the doors had to have a contrasting colour added, to meet current safety standards. 201 has been an unreliable runner recently and this was due to be its last passenger-carrying outing, before scrapping. Some have gone already and the rest should be taken out of service during May 2023. This special service was organized by the Branch Line Society and ran on the South Coastway lines between Portsmouth and Hastings.
