There is a fine tradition in country Western Australia of putting unwanted items on the verge outside one's house. They are frequently picked over by others and sometimes taken away and repaired or used. Twice a year we have collections where almost anything can be piled onto the verge. Over the two weeks or so that these items are displayed, one can see cars screech to a halt and riders leap from the vehicle and sort through the pile for treasure. Eventually the shire collects the remainder.
I have a chum who collects and repairs items which he can then either sell or donate to others.
I once left an Apple iMac on the verge. It had died, as even Apple iMacs will. Within minutes of me closing the front door, a car had appeared and my computer was gone. An hour later, however, it reappeared as the collector had discovered I had removed the hard drive and the chips!
