Green alkanet

A wild flower. Taken in my back garden last May...........before the hot weather started!

Edit 18th Aug...........I had the identify of this plant wrong. It is, in fact, Green alkanet..........and not Creeping navelwort, a very similar plant. My thanks to Amelia for putting me right!

This is more likely to be Green alkanet which forms a rosette of bristly, pointed, oval leaves up to 40cm (16in) long. Sometimes the leaves have small white speckles.

Upright, bristly stems bear smaller leaves and start to produce pinkish-mauve flower buds in spring. The buds open to small, bright blue flowers with white centres. Flowering continues through summer if the ground is moist.

In its preferred growing conditions of partial shade and damp soil, green alkanet grows to about 90cm (3ft) tall.

Creeping navelwort, Omphalodes verna, has not got hairy leaves or stems.

Some fine details here, Keith
