What is the function of these dividers on the beach, Keith?

The "dividers" are called Groynes.......these one are made of wood. They are rigid structures built from the shore into the sea to interrupt water motion and sediment movement. They basically stop the wind and tides moving the sediment, sand and pebbles around and prevent the deterioration of the beach.

Its not advisable to try swimming in our shores at this time of year Keith, no matter how much the sun and blue skies might try to entice. Another fine shot and it's refreshing to see the top half of picture, against popular photo P.o.V rules showing so much of the sky and clouds.
