Hazelnut

There is an old proverb, “Nuts trees are gifts from the past; plant them as gifts to the future.”

The beaked hazelnut tree this nut came from was a gift from friends who lived where this species grows naturally, on the west coast of Newfoundland. They brought it as a root twelve years ago to Ganny Cove; we planted it and it has grown. Last year it produced its first hazelnut. The local squirrel got it before we did. Grrr.

This year it produced three nuts but this time the squirrel kindly left one for us.

Today we picked, peeled, roasted and ate it. It was delicious.

Long may this plant produce nuts.
