Swans on the Pond

For over three decades I worked for the State of Michigan at the State Secondary Complex in Windsor Township. While the Secretary of State Building isn't particularly attractive (or comfortable), it borders on this very inviting natural area.

Joan often spends her breaks watching the birds, large and small, that call the place home.

==========

Eaton County's early settlers knew Windsor Township to be a large bog--they called it the Old Maid's Swamp. The Old Maid covered much of Windsor and spilled into neighboring Delta, Benton, and Eaton Rapids townships.

The marsh has been largely tamed, though the township remains quite wet. The Secondary Complex swamp is perhaps the most obvious remnant of the daunting prospect the 1830s settlers encountered.
