Detail of Ship's Anchor on Nelson Memorial at Portsmouth
The Nelson memorial quotes his famous words "England expects that every man will do his duty". This was his message sent in 1805 as the British fleet took on Spanish and French vessels at Trafalgar.
Fortunately for those of us who received a modern education, this was an amendment to his original text which ran "England confides that every man will do his duty".
