The locals in Zhenhai, are proud of the "Battle of Zhenhai." It was a battle between the French and the Chinese during the Sino-French War. The French claim that they just lobbed a few canonballs at the mainland, and stopped boats leaving the port. The Chinese claim that they tied up a number of French battle shops for the duration of the war, reducing the impact of the French Navy.

Both are probably true.
