Old bridge at Bideford

Each archway are different sizes, apparently because the towns' people way back in 1300's, were asked to pay for the bridge and those with not a lot of money only paid for a small arch!!! OR it could be that the arches were put onto solid ground which were at different places!!

I just remembered that tale from when I was a youngster and I've met lots of people who've heard the same. Although I am aware of the bottom of the river bed not being completely solid all across, so they had to ensure the bridge was on solid foundations.
