Medronheiro
Arbutus unedo, o medronheiro, é uma espécie de pequenas árvores frutíferas pertencentes ao género Arbutus da família das Ericales. Com distribuição natural na Bacia do Mediterrâneo e costa atlântica da Europa Ocidental, resistente ao fogo, ocorre em zonas de solos siliciosos pobres e de elevado declive, sendo uma das mais importantes espécies do maquial mediterrânico e das charnecas ibéricas. O fruto é o medronho, utilizado na produção de aguardentes e licores. Em Portugal, ocorre em todo o país, mas com maior concentração nas serras do Caldeirão e Monchique (Algarve).
Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, is a species of small fruit trees belonging to the genus Arbutus of the Ericales family. Naturally distributed in the Mediterranean Basin and the Atlantic coast of Western Europe, it is fire-resistant and occurs in areas of poor siliceous soils and steep slopes, being one of the most important species of the Mediterranean maquis and Iberian moors. The fruit is the strawberry tree, used in the production of brandies and liqueurs. In Portugal, it occurs throughout the country, but with greater concentration in the mountains of Caldeirão and Monchique (Algarve).
