The city of Montemor-o-Novo – county seat, a village of very ancient origin, was initially located on the inner part of the Castle wall, later expanding along the slope facing north, where it is currently located.
The village appears between the period of Muslim occupation and the Christian reconquest, the first news of its existence dating from 1181. D. Afonso Henriques reconquered this territory in 1160 to be plundered and burned by the Moors in 1190.
