A folly
Perched on one of the highest points in the Cotswolds, Broadway Tower is a striking example of 18th-century whimsy and ambition. Dreamed up by Capability Brown and realised by architect James Wyatt for the 6th Earl of Coventry, the tower was finished in 1798 and has been turning heads ever since. Its unusual blend of turrets, battlements, and quirky details gives it the air of a fairytale castle, though it was never intended as a fortress. The site itself was chosen for its commanding position, offering breathtaking views that, on a clear day, stretch across a patchwork of English counties. Throughout its colourful past, the tower has played host to artists, writers, and even served as a lookout during wartime. Today, it’s a magnet for visitors eager to soak up both the scenery and the stories, making it a must-see for anyone exploring the Cotswolds.
