Die Geflügelte Rossameise (Camponotus) ist angekommen :)) The winged carpenter ant (Camponotus) has arrived :)) La fourmi charpentière ailée (Camponotus) est arrivée :))

Winged carpenter ants are not a distinct species of ant; rather, they are the reproductive individuals (virgin queens and males) of the carpenter ant (*Camponotus*), which is one of the largest ant species in Central Europe. Winged queens often reach a length of 16 to 20 mm. They possess two pairs of translucent wings—used exclusively for the nuptial flight—and range in color from deep black to reddish-brown. Typically, from late spring to early summer, hundreds of winged ants leave the nest simultaneously during warm, humid weather to mate in mid-air. The males die shortly after successful mating. The fertilized virgin queen actively sheds her wings (breaking them off at a pre-determined breaking point) and searches the ground for a suitable hiding place.
