86/365 2026 Totems - Building the Breakwalls

Building the Breakwalls.

Shipping was the fastest and most practical way of transport in early days but on having to cross the dangerous river sandbars many ships were wrecked. Settlers upset at seeing their hard-earned crops go down on the bar pleaded with the government to build breakwalls at the river entrance to create a permanent channel. In 1894 rock quarried at Criowdy Head was loaded onto trucks and pulled by horse teams along a tramline behind the dunes. A steam engine later took over, wharves were built and for over 30 years men worked in difficult conditions with basic equipment to build these breakwalls.

Gillian Everett replied to Pam J:

Thanks Pam. It must have been hard work in the pioneering days. The break walls are very impressive. The bar is still difficult for boats to cross.
