Happy Wednesday Wall!

The McCaul St. elevation of the Health Sciences Centre at University of Toronto. It was built for the old Toronto Board of Education. I could not find out who carved the relief.

John FitzGerald replied to Manuel Wesser:

It's the lamp of learning, Manuel, but that is considered a symbol of hope.

John FitzGerald replied to Andrew Trundlewagon:

The building was intended as a showpiece, Andrew, so it was probably done by someone important. I worked there back when it was the headquarters of the board of education. It was, and I believe still is, a stunning building inside. It had a theatre with huge murals commemorating Montessori, and other murals throughout, including a 30-metre-or-so one in the cafeteria about the history of eating, starting with a caveman tucking into a roast leg of some giant animal. I think these have all been preserved. I haven't been in there for some time, but the last time I was the cafeteria was gone but the mural was still there. Expensive finishes throughout, etc.
