I like the solitary figure...........and there's a lovely feeling of space and emptiness, The stark contrast of the light and shadows works very well.

John FitzGerald replied to Keith Burton:

Thanks, Keith. The figure added some mystery for me. Maybe I should try for more of that stark contrast, too, in my other photos.

Spaces like this tend to bother me. I have a very low boredom threshold, and there is NOTHING for me to do or look at in a place like this. It's like somebody tied me up and left me in an empty warehouse.

John FitzGerald replied to rdhinmn:

If you're dumpster diving this will inspire you, though, Bob. However, I too am easily bored and often have the same problem as you. I had hoped during my year spent in suburbia to get some good views of a world I was unused to, but I found very few. Finding visual interest is difficult when everything is beige. Even the advertising is bland because the shopping centres are full of chains, who have already attracted attention with their advertising and want to look respectable.

My new neighbourhood is better. I was looking out my window the other day and saw a pair of giant wings flapping at the top of a five-storey-tall tree. I thought it might be a big vulture, so I waited a bit, and then off flew a great white heron. I hadn't known that the top branches of a tree would support them. Lots of trees in my previous neighbourhood, but none anywhere near as tall, and no herons. One up for the new neighbourhood.

Beyond the Mall? Or: After the Goldrush? Or: Reality behind Illusions - anyway: you hit the mood of these places perfectly and b/w fits very well.

Thanks, Leon. I don't know if you've noticed this photo -- different alley, similar reality:

A great composition, the wide shadow and single figure really make it work well.
