Was it really simpler? When I think of the correspondence... If you had a typewriter, you had to get paper, maybe write with a carbon copy. Ah, and the ribbon! You had to find an envelope... then stamps, find a post office if you didn't have any stamps available, then post it and wait till you got an answer.....
