It's _all_ lava, Don! Those slopes and bluffs behind are stacks and stacks of individual flows of Columbia River basalt! This is a bench consisting of one of the lower flows that's been plucked and scoured by the Scabland floods.,

For we non-geologist, 'lava field' means a relatively flat area where lava flowed and cooled leaving unusual formations.....But it's true that we should be more specific rather than contributing a notion that the cliffs in the distance aren't lava.
