Santa Rosa Flamingo resort (#1004)

by Don Barrett (aka DBs travels)
Part of my plans for this trip were to go up to Clearlake (more on that later), which required meandering through Santa Rosa and Calistoga. My previous experiences with Santa Rosa were of it as a relatively sedate and routine suburban town, so I was surprised to see this elaborate sign on the eastern edge of Santa Rosa. It turns out that, tucked away in a town that people often ignore, is a resort designed along the lines of the Las Vegas Flamingo – a resort “renowned by Hollywood as the place to stay north of the Bay.” On the webpage linked below is a small picture of Jayne Mansfield by the pool, in a bikini, towering (in more than height) over what appears to be a teenage boy.

Oh my gosh, the Flamingo! Haven't thought about that in years. I lived in several places in Sonoma County for about 10 years and loved it. This sign always made me smile.

I was surprised to read about it. I don't know how I've had just short of 50 years with the Bay Area but had never heard about it.

I don't think it's exactly famous, except in Sonoma County. A nice bit of kitsch.

If it were in SoCal, the fact that it was popular with Hollywood would have made it famous. It seemed that the Bay Area was more blase about stars.
